WPLS Emergency Plan

We are witnessing a sober time in our nations history.  As our country continues to prepare for a possible military confrontation with Iraq and as we watch developments in North Korea, we simultaneously encounter significant threats of terrorism from individuals that would seek to harm the people of the United States.  I am certain that each of us share a mutual concern over these events.  We hear in Psalm 46:1, The Lord is our strength and refuge, an ever-present help in time of need.  It is our daily prayer, and we likewise would encourage you to join us in such a prayer, that our Lord grant wisdom to our nations leaders; that He would instill in each of us a spirit of peace and calm one that passes all human understanding; and that justice and His will be accomplished in our world.

As each of you know, West Park Lutheran School takes the safety of each of our students extremely seriously.  We are consequently making sure that we are prepared as well as possible in the event of any emergency.  While each situation warrants its own unique action, the following basic steps will be followed:

  • In the event that a crisis situation occurs when school is not in session, watch the network stations for the latest school update regarding West Park Lutheran School.  Any decision regarding the cancellation of classes will be broadcast, just as it would if weather caused a cancellation.
  • If school is not in session, extra-curricular practices and events are also cancelled.
  • If students are already at school and a national crisis occurs, the administrative team will meet to determine any immediate threat to our students.  If there is no immediate threat to our students, we will have an assembly to update our students on the particular event, to answer questions and, most importantly, to pray.  Assuming that no evident danger is present for our student body, classes would then resume.  We strongly believe that in such a situation where our students safety does not appear to be at risk the best place for our students to be is at school.  Having students be at home by themselves is, in our opinion, not preferable. If you as a parent desire for your student to be dismissed from school, we will obviously honor your request.  Only through direct communication with a parent would we excuse any student from the building.  If school is not in session, extra-curricular practices and events are also cancelled.
  • Should a crisis occur and government mandates be given (i.e. stay off the roads, remain at your location) we would obviously honor these directives.
  • If a crisis occurs which would put our students in potential danger, the administrative team will coordinate a specific response and take actions that best help to protect our student body.  The specifics of such a response obviously depend upon the specifics of the crisis.

This writing is certainly not meant to add to any potential stress or alarm that you might be feeling as an individual quite the opposite.  We hope that you find our planning and communication to be a comfort should a crisis or emergency occur.  The motto of Be Prepared is an excellent credo in planning for potential crises.  This motto pales in comparison to the power of prayer.  Let us join as a West Park Lutheran community in prayer for each of our students, our country our world and our leaders.
